MOVIN' MAVS 3-1 AT MISSOURI
Your UTA Movin' Mavs started strong during a two day wheelchair basketball road trip at the University of Missouri. Using a full court press and ten players on the roster the Mavs began Friday with a 57-43 win over the host Missouri Tigers. The Mavs were led by Sr. Kinesiology Major David Wilkes (16 points/8 rebounds), Sr. Business Major James Patin (14 points) and Freshman Social Work Major John McPhail (8 rebounds/6 assists). After that, with only 1 hour to rest and get lunch, the Mavs came out sluggish against a feisty Alabama group. The Mavs couldn't seem to find the rim for the game, and after an 18/61 shooting performance, fell to the Tide by 6. Wilkes was the only Movin' Mav in double figures with 18 points, followed by Freshman Aaron Patterson's 8 points/7 rebounds/4 assists.
On Saturday the Mavs showed up rested and ready to take on all challengers. The day started with an 18 point hammering over the Alabama Crimson Tide. Improved shooting and hard defense proved to be the story of the game as the Mavericks shot 27/54 while holding the Tide to 35% from the floor. David Wilkes recorded a double/double for the game with 11 points/10 rebounds and 7 assists, followed by Pattersons 14 points/9 rebounds/5 assists, 11 points from Patin and 11 points from Sophomore Engineering Major Tomas Lobo. John McPhail continued to be a presence for the Mavs with 8 points, 11 rebounds and 6 assists.
To finish the weekend the Mavs upperclassmen were able to rest and enjoy a dominating performance from the future of the Mav program as a Freshman/Sophomore line-up jumped out to a 30-14 halftime lead over the host Missouri Tigers. Patterson's 18 points in the first half led the Movin' Mav efforts, Freshman Business Major Jorge Sanchez 9 rebounds dominating the boards. Lobo and McPhail each chipped in 5 assists.
The next weekend of games for the Movin' Mavs comes Feb. 11-14 at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa!
Congratulations to the following Movin' Mavs Athletes and Staff for 3.0 or higher in Fall Semester! Ten of 17 players and staff hit the magic 3.0 mark! Great Job!
Tim Caldwell, David Wilkes, Kasey Stelter, John Macphail, Tyler Garner, Jainy James, Jeff Sale, John Brunett, Jorge Sanchez, Shane Crider.
GO MAVS!
Movin' Mavs finish 2nd in ABC Medical Invitational
The Movin' Mavs finished the Fall Semester with some great basketball on our home court, co-hosting the ABC Medical Invitational with the Dallas Wheelchair Mavericks. In the Friday night game against the #8 Nationally ranked Dallas Uro-Sport Texans, with four former USA National Team players, the Movin' Mavs found themselves with two starters out of the line-up with injuries. Playing a mostly Freshman/Sophomore line-up the Movin' Mavs came from 15 down to lose to the Texans by 2 points, 51-49. The Mavs were led by Freshmen Aaron Patterson and Jorge Sanchez, with two key steals buy Junior Kasey Stelter.
On Saturday, with a full line-up back the Movin' Mavs used fitness, quickness and speed to take down the previously undefeated and #1 Nationally ranked Community Division Arkansas Rollin' Razorbacks 55-41. Former USA National Team Member Jeff Glassbrenner posted 18 for the Razorbacks, but couldn't overcome the nine Movin' Mavs who contributed to the scoreboard in the game, with first year Seniors David Wilkes and James Patin each in double digits. Also on Saturday the Dallas Mavericks continued to dominate the competition, winning games by 30+ points against the best teams in the NWBA Community Division. The Movin' Mavs brought a great fight to the contest with the Mavericks, and jumped out to a 16-2 lead before the experience of the Community team kicked in to get the game under control. In a much improved showing, the Movin' Mavs made it a close game to the end, losing to the Mavericks by just 16 points - 64-48. Movin' Mav Alumni Jay Nelms led the now #1 Nationally ranked Mavericks with some clutch shooting and 11 huge points along with 22 from UTA ELI student Rodney Hawkins. UTA was led by Freshman Patterson's 17 points and 10 from Patin.
Sunday morning saw a matchup for 2nd place in the tournament with the Movin' Mavs meeting up with the #5 Ranked Los Angeles Fast Breakin' Lakers and former Movin' Mav Eddie McGee. Engineering major Sophomore Tomas Lobo helped UTA off to a good start with 4/4 shooting and 9 big first half points coming out of the gate. Continuing with the "40 minutes of pressure" line-up that was successful in the Saturday games, the Movin' Mavs jumped out to an 18 point first half lead and held on to win the game 61 -49. Sr. Forward Wilkes led UTA with 16 points, followed by two outstanding Freshmen efforts from Patterson (13 points) and Australian import John Macphail's 10 points.
The Movin' Mavs will be back in action in the Spring with Intercollegiate Division road trips to Conference rivals Missouri and Alabama before finishing the season at perennial foe Univ. of Illinois and the College Division National Championships at Southwest Minnesota State University.
Happy Holidays to all of the Movin' Mav Fans! Why not give a gift of education this holiday season with a tax deductible donation to the Movin' Mav Scholarship Fund?!

Intramural 3 on 3 Wheelchair Basketball a HIT!
The "Game Over" team won their way out of the loser's bracket to take the 3 on 3 wheelchair basketball intramural title over "Skeeziness". Ian Pierson led Game Over to the come back victory while Freshman Jorge Sanchez led Skeeziness through the tough 10 team competition in the winners bracket into the Championship game. Movin' Mav Josh Rucker led Josh's Ballers to a 3rd place finish with an over-time win over Tomas Lobo's team the Lobo's. A large crowd watched the action in the MAC and cheered for their favorite teams as diversity took the stage while able body students and students with disabilities teamed together to compete for this inaugural title!
Movin' Mavs begin season 4-1
The Movin' Mavs began their road back to the Collegiate Division Championship Game with convincing wins over University of Missouri, University of Alabama, University of Illinois (W) and the Dallas Uro-Med Texans. The only loss of the weekend in the home opener was to the University of Illinois in front of over 1500 Movin' Mav fans in Texas Hall. It was a great weekend of Collegiate Wheelchair Basketball and we would like to thank the entire UTA Community, students/faculty/staff/administration for their incredible support in packing Texas Hall! We would also like to thank the Brothers of the Pi Kappa Phi fraternity for their fund raising work with PushAmerica and their generous donation to the Movin' Mavs! The Movin' Mav program will be hosting the Jim Hayes Memorial Junior Tournament on the weekend of Nov. 20-22 with some of the top NWBA Junior Division teams in the country on campus competing for a bid to the NWBA Junior Division National Championships in April of 2010. Our next home games are the weekend of Dec. 11-13 in the ABC Medical Invitational in the PEB Gym. See the game schedule on our home page for game times!
WHY GIVE TO THE UTA MOVIN' MAV PROGRAM?
The Movin' Mavs and the UTA Adapted Sport Programs are leaders in providing sport and recreation opportunities in the DFW area. We are planning two Paralympic Sport clinics, a clinic for veterans with disabilities, an intramural sport program for students on campus with disabilities and of course the Movin' Mavs Wheelchair Basketball Team. Our team is one of the top teams in the Intercollegiate Division of the National Wheelchair Basketball Association and one of the only programs in the U.S. that provides sport scholarships for students with disabilities, many of them full scholarships that provide opportunities for students to prepare for a full and successful life both on and off the court! Plus, the Movin' Mav program also serves as a training ground for athletes to reach their athletic potential to play at National Team and International levels of play.
Beyond that, sports participation is more than just sports. Consider helping our program provide activities and opportunities for students with disabilities to participate in healthy and positive programs that allow them to experience the full range of College life and University experiences.
Visit our sponsor page and see how you can help the Movin' Mavs continue our mission of helping student athletes with disabilities or contact Coach Doug Garner at dgarner@uta.edu to help sponsor some of our upcoming events! Alumni Donations for Scholarship Fund recognized
The Movin' Mavs are excited to recognize the support of David and Carmella Russell, in memory of Coach Jim Hayes and in honor of David Russell for the Alumni Scholarship Fund. We are now close to the $4000 mark for our Alumni Scholarship - the Jim Hayes Memorial Scholarship - which will provide an opportunity for a student athlete to attend UTA and benefit from the experiences of representing the Movin' Mavs and the University on campus, in our Community and around the country! We are working to help young athletes become part of the UTA and Movin' Mav network of success and help the Movin' Mavs continue to represent the University as a force in the NWBA Intercollegiate Division! Thanks to all of you who have become a part of the Movin' Mav Team of athletes, parents, families and supporters and have helped in working toward our goal of $25,000 to provide the MAVERICK experience to an athlete for a full year!
Wheelchair Tennis team wins National CHAMPIONSHIP
Congratulations to Jeff Sale and James Patin for representing UTA so well at the Intercollegiate Tennis National Championships at Mobile, AL. Jeff finished in the top five in the Tier One (Advanced/Veteran) bracket and James won the National Championship in the Tier Two (Novice) Bracket. The two combined to finish as the National Champions in Doubles, after victories over Grand Valley State and University of Arizona and a close loss to a team with players combined from Auburn and MIT.
MOVIN' MAV SCHOLARSHIP FUND
Thanks to a generous donation from Movin' Mav supporters Ron and Trisha Labar, the Movin' Mav Parent and Alumni Scholarship Fund is off to a great start! The goal of this fund is to support one scholarship every year for a Movin' Mav Student Athlete. Currently the fund is at $3500 and we need a total of $25,000 to support a Movin' Mav player for one season! Individuals or businesses wishing to provide an outstanding academic and sport opportunity for a young athlete with a disability can send a tax deductible donation to:

MOVIN' MAVS WIN HEART ASSOCIATION FUND RAISING CHALLENGE
Congratulations to the Movin' Mavs for winning the fund raising challenge at the American Heart Association Cyclethon on Monday at the MAC. The Mavs, known as Team Arm-strong for the evening, manned their hand-cycle station for 12 hours of non-stop cycle action while raising money from friends and supporters for the American Heart Association! Anthony "Hey There" Pone got the team off to a good start in the first shift of the ride and the rest of the team and staff of the Movin' Mavs "strong-armed" almost $400 in donations for the Heart Association! Thank you to Kala and the staff at the MAC for their inclusive thinking in including a team of riders with disabilities in this very fun event!
MOVIN' MAVS UPDATES
Congratulations to former Movin' Mav Jay Nelms for leading the USA National Team to a Gold Medal at the America's Cup Zone Qualifier in Vancouver, Canada last week.
Jay was named MVP of the Tournament. He led the US team from 10 behind to capture the Gold Medal and help the USA qualify for the 2010 World Championships in Birmingham, England. Jay was part of a US starting five that featured 3 UTA Alumni – Mikey Paye, Jay and Paul Schulte.
